Proposed North Spit Shorebird Sanctuary

The 270-acre Weyerhaeuser property on the North Spit of Coos Bay was used for treatment of wastewater from the containerboard (cardboard) mill that Weyerhaeuser shut down in 1996. Since that time the site has re-vegetated and turned into high-value habitat, particularly for migratory shorebirds in the fall. In 2008, CAAS hired a consultant to study the site and worked with him to document its habitat and recreational values. We invite you to read the Conservation Prospectus Report and let us know what you think. You can help CAAS find a way to establish a vegetation management plan and public access for the site.

In addition, Tim Rodenkirk has written a North Spit Site Guide—a great description of the site and the incredible variety of birds that use it.

Update September 2011: The site is now officially Port of Coos Bay property and open to public use. Future plans are under discussion.
